“In one of the most impactful moments of my career, I worked with artisanal fishers on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. At the time, I was a conservation biologist working for a marine conservation organisation promoting sustainable fishing practices with local fisheries in Baja California Sur.
Through this work, I met many fishers whose practices had been generational and passed down by their ancestors. These fishers knew everything about the ocean: how the waves moved, the whereabouts of different species, and the changing nature of our blue planet.
Their connection with the ocean was central to their lives, and despite the transformation to sustainable fishing being more complex and tedious for their work, these fishers were driven to make every effort to protect this connection to the blue planet. They showed me that anyone, anywhere, has the chance to make a difference in their everyday lives.
This experience also showed me the power of community and collaboration, emphasising that our ability to make a difference is not necessarily through the impacts of the work but through our influence on the people around us.
This domino effect is why I’ve chosen to be a part of a Brighter Future team that works exclusively with planet-driven companies. It’s more than just believing in the impacts of our client's efforts; it’s about the ways these individuals and organizations inspire our own efforts to be better stewards of the planet.”
