Spotlight: From Empty Promises to Real Partnerships
The first time they attended a big-name climate conference they arrived full of hope, having been promised access to investors and potential partners, but secretly they wondered if it would end up another round of polite nods and zero follow-ups. The marble lobby echoed with footsteps and vague greetings. Their first meeting was with a prominent investor who spent the entire half-hour checking their phone. Later they joined a “partner matchmaking” session only to find half the tables empty and the organisers apologising for no-shows. By evening their business cards felt like paperweights and their notebook remained void of action items.
Fast forward to Hack Summit. They opened the Brella app and within minutes were seated across from a carbon removal VC whose eyes lit up at their pilot concept. The smell of fresh coffee faded as they leaned in under warm spotlights in a quiet corner. Every graph they showed felt urgent, every question led to genuine dialogue. They sketched a joint roadmap on a crisp napkin, paper rustling under their pens. By day two they had secured twenty follow-up meetings with investors and partners. What had once felt like slog transformed into a series of moments that mattered. At Hack Summit connections were never an afterthought but the very reason to be there, unlike so many other events and conferences that promise the world.
Three Moves to Network with Purpose
Before you hit the floor at upcoming events, make sure you craft a crisp elevator pitch and no-brainer offer. Use this template to get started:
“I’m [Name], [Role] at [Company/Studio], I solve [high-stakes challenge] around [investment/partnerships], working on a success-fee only model so our incentives align with yours, I also founded Brighter Future a creative studio focused on brand and design, which works as my design execution arm”
Once you’ve nailed that, apply these three tactics:
Open with Stakes Not Slides
Begin every conversation with your scenario hook, “Our platform prevented a care-home heatwave collapse last summer.” Skip the intro slides and lead with impact.Weave in Real-Time Data
Bring a live dashboard screenshot or a one-minute demo of your impact metrics. Seeing your numbers update in real time turns abstract claims into urgent evidence.Invite Co-Creation
Instead of ending with “Can we collaborate?”, sketch a joint pilot concept or potential goals/next steps on the nearest surface, napkin, tablet or fold-out page. That shared creation moment sparks ownership and accelerates next steps.
Use these moves at your next event and watch “Is this worth attending?” become “When do we start?”

Hack Summit: Three Trends to Watch
Building on those breakthrough conversations, three themes dominated both stage and hallway exchanges. These are signals you can act on today:
Regulation as Opportunity
Panels on the EU’s forthcoming product circularity rules framed regulation not as a hurdle but as a launchpad. Founders who foreground compliance as a competitive advantage will win the sharpest nods from investors.
Takeaway: Lead with emerging policy shifts and show how your solution turns requirements into market edge.
Data Driven Storytelling
Start-ups are embedding live dashboards and impact metrics directly into pitches, turning abstract sustainability claims into real-time evidence. This blend of narrative and data creates both urgency and credibility.
Takeaway: Integrate at least one dynamic metric or dashboard snapshot in your next deck to show, not just tell, your impact trajectory.
Cross Sector Collaboration
Unexpected alliances, from ag-tech innovators partnering with biodegradable-textile pioneers to fusion energy teams teaming up with grid optimisation platforms, surfaced everywhere. These hybrid partnerships signal where large funders intend to deploy capital.
Takeaway: Identify one adjacent sector you can co-develop with and sketch a joint pilot slide to spark investor imaginations.

Prepare for the Summer Slowdown
June and early July are high intensity, founders push to close deals, investors wrap up diligence, partnerships race to sign. But August brings one of the quietest annual lulls.
Use this window to step back, regroup and sharpen your materials. When energy returns in September you will be ten steps ahead.
