Changemaker of the Month: Richard Hardiman, Founder of RanMarine
Every month, we will recognise our Changemaker of the Month, a member of the impact and climate communities who is working to make a difference in the world. We’ll share their stories and insights from their experiences, highlight their work in the impact and climate space.
This month, we are sharing insights from Richard Hardiman, Founder of RanMarine. RanMarine is an Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV) company that uses drones on water to clean up pollutants. They’ve developed a way to navigate water systems and high-traffic areas, focusing on cleaning up pollution in those areas before the trash or biomass gets mixed around in open water.
On What RanMarine is Trying to Achieve
“We started out with a very clear idea: how do we stop plastic from getting into the water? As you get into that industry, though, you realise there are other things in the water causing equal problems to drinking water or the ecosystems. That's why we're developing our WasteShark platforms. We want to clean that pollution out in totality.”
On Leadership and Learning as an Entrepreneur
“What I found is that you don’t need to understand all of it. You just need to find people who understand all of it. You should have a good understanding of all of it to find better people, but if you truly want to grow the business, know that you can't do it alone.”
On Advice for Young Entrepreneurs
“Just do it. If you're in a corporate job and you have a great idea and you have a little bit of finance, work on that idea in the evenings. If you think it's fantastic, there will come a point where you have to make a choice. Being an entrepreneur is not a safe space. So, if you're incredibly uncomfortable with it, then maybe it's not for you. But you won't know until you do it.”

The Path to Transformation: How to Get A Critical Idea Out Into the World
We recently worked with Eeden, a pioneering startup redefining the circular textile industry. Their innovative approach to textile recycling offers a tangible solution to reducing waste in the fashion sector.
From the outset, their vision was clear. The team’s commitment to driving change and the ingenuity of their work were unwavering. It was evident that their solution held immense promise, yet it remained largely unnoticed in the wider industry. Why wasn’t this innovation at the forefront of conversation?
This challenge is not uncommon for impact-driven organisations. Many transformative ideas in the climate and impact space struggle to gain traction simply because they fail to engage the right audience.
Even Eeden, whose technology had the potential to be industry-defining, had to face this question: how do we communicate the product’s value in a way that drives action?
To start, a key challenge for mission-driven organizations is securing credibility and strategic partnerships that accelerate growth and communicate this value. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by reshaping the way the story is told, ensuring it resonates with decision-makers and aligns with industry priorities.
Rather than leading with technical details, it's crucial to frame the problem in a way that makes inaction impossible.
For instance, in industries facing sustainability challenges, illustrating the scale of waste or inefficiency can set the stage for why change is necessary. Take a startup working to combat plastic pollution in the oceans; the first step is to highlight how prominent ocean plastics are in our world, connecting the issue with the target audience.
From there, it's important to position innovation not just as an ethical choice but as a business imperative, contributing to messaging that adopting sustainable solutions isn't just responsible; it’s essential.
Then we drive the message home; for mission-driven organisations, this means emphasising the sense of urgency to further drive action. Data-backed insights and forecasts can help reinforce the idea that industry leaders must act now rather than risk falling behind.
Along with the messaging, make it easy for partners to commit. Rather than proposing high-commitment collaborations upfront, offer a low-risk entry point, such as letters of intent, pilot programs, or exclusive early access. This can encourage partners to buy into your organisation while still maintaining a sense of exclusivity.
Finding a way to combine this strategic framing, sense of urgency, and more accessible partnerships can transform conversations and open the doors to meaningful collaboration. Success isn’t just about having a breakthrough solution; it’s about finding ways to connect that solution with the world.
